About this snail

No two shells tell quite the same story. Batik Pattern Nerites bring intricate markings and natural color variation to an aquarium's algae-grazing crew.

Is this right for me?

Choose this snail for a cycled tank that already has algae to eat. It is not a good choice for a freshly filled, spotless tank.

Getting your tank ready

Use an aquarium that has completed its cycle: helpful bacteria in the filter must be established to break down animal waste. A newly filled tank is not ready for animals just because the water looks clear. This snail needs a tank with enough naturally growing algae to eat. Check that it is eating; it may not accept pellets or other prepared foods. Keep water conditions steady.

Keeping it with other animals

Choose gentle fish and other animals. Nerites may leave visible eggs on surfaces, but those eggs will not lead to a growing population of baby snails in a normal freshwater aquarium.

What you get

Approximate size when purchased: approximately 1 inch in diameter. Select grade and quantity where offered.

A closer look

Each shell has its own pattern; photographs are examples. B-grade options may have shell chips or subtler markings.

Water details explained

Reference values from the product information: temperature 68–84°F; pH (acidity) 7.4–8.4; KH (buffering capacity, which helps keep pH steady) 3–14. Check the needs of the snail you choose before changing your tank's water.
