About this fish

The classic flash of blue and red never gets old. Classic Neon Tetras add a colorful group of fish to a peaceful freshwater aquarium.

Is this right for me?

Plan for a group of fish, enough swimming room, and a tank that has completed its cycle. Check the needs of the fish you already keep.

Getting your tank ready

Use an aquarium that has completed its cycle: helpful bacteria in the filter must be established to break down animal waste. A newly filled tank is not ready for animals just because the water looks clear. Keep water conditions steady. Introduce fish gradually to the new tank's water, and provide plants for cover as well as open swimming space. Keep this fish in a group.

Keeping it with other animals

Choose gentle fish of a similar size. Fish may eat baby shrimp, even when plants provide hiding places.

A closer look

Neon Tetra (Paracheirodon innesi). Keep at least six together. These fish are listed as bred in tanks rather than collected from the wild. Introduce them gradually to their new tank's water.

Water details explained

Reference values from the product information: temperature 72–75°F; pH (acidity) 7.2–7.5; GH (general water hardness) 7–8; KH (buffering capacity, which helps keep pH steady) 3–4; TDS (total dissolved solids, a measure of dissolved substances) 180–250. These are holding conditions, not a complete care range for every species.
